“How to Support a Survivor When Calling the Police Is Not an Option” Virtual Discussion
YWCA Northeast Kansas
Event Date/Time:
- Wednesday, October 21, 2020
1:00pm — 3:00pm
Survivors are often asked why they “didn’t just call the police” when faced with domestic and sexual violence. The answer to this question is complicated and varies from survivor to survivor. Fear. Manipulation. Control. Shame. Blame. Judgement. Isolation. Discrimination. Bias. These barriers, compounded with institutional and historical factors and the lack of safe and culturally competent resources, can often times become heightened when survivors are part of a marginalized community, such as Native and Indigenous survivors, survivors of color, immigrant survivors, LGBTQIA+ survivors and survivors who live within impoverished neighborhoods, ultimately giving those survivors fewer options for seeking justice, safety and help.
So, how can you help someone who may be experiencing intimate partner violence? Tune in to this virtual discussion presented by Emily Steimel-Handy, YWCA Center for Safety and Empowerment, and Molly Steffes-Herman, Washburn University Campus Advocate, to learn how to validate, support, empower and connect a survivor to resources that can help. We will be providing facts and stats on intimate partner violence, debunking myths and providing you with resources so that you may help survivors in your own circle thrive. Whether through law enforcement, a friend, a co-worker, a family member, a faith leader, an advocate or any other option, survivors should be met with support, love and safety.
